Venice - July 15, 2007

First off, I need to apologize to Andi and the Italian Untours team for going on Denny's orientation June 21. On the 20th Andi emailed me NOT to go because I may be stepping on Denny's toes. This is supposed to be just for Untourists, and not independent travelers. I've been on three Untours to Venice and still feel like an Untourist. I had just wanted to meet some of the Untourists I had met through the Chatline. Wednesday July 11 was the first time I'd been able to find an Internet Point that could speak enough English to help me with a "real computer" - I just have a TV computer, you may remember. So didn't read her email til then. Again, I apologize, but did enjoy meeting Denny again and fellow Untourists.

Last night was the Redentore celebration, and fireworks that didn't start until 11:35 p.m. I had left the apartment about 8:30, and found a very good spot to watch - next to the top step on "my bridge". Hadn't brought the cane I use for steps because I wasn't expecting steps, but I figured I could manage because I can always hold on to the sides. Ha! When it was over, the bridge was still wall-to-wall with people, no way of getting near the sides. I asked a guy if he could move a bit, and he insisted on helping me all the way down ("I'm a macho guy" he said). I "grazie, grazie"d him. All the hotels had special rates for the evening, with prime rooms going as high as €600, and special dinners with prime view as high as €300 a person. The restaurant near me, at the bottom of the bridge, had a multi-course dinner for €90, and waterside seating. Not a bad price, considering the view and dinner and being able to SIT for four hours!

The rio outside my window was especially quiet today. They are probably resting up after a night of partying.

Did I tell you about my bathroom? It has to be the world's smallest at 3'4" wide and 4'3" deep, with the door facing the apartment door. It's so small I can touch both sides at one time. (For those who don't know, I'm only 4'8"!) In this room is the sink, toilet, bidet, and shower. The shower is just curtained off in the middle of the room with the drain in the floor.

I'll write more later, now that I've found a place where I pay when I'm finished, and won't get cut off when my paid time runs out. That's happened before when I lose everything because my time ran out and I didn't realize it.

Lynanne...I just happened to find your blog....from a comment in the Untour "forum" I think. It is so much fun reading your narrative. We have not been to Venice for many years but loved it when we were there. I am umable to walk well so we have pretty much given up trips to Europe. gloom... Please keep your blog filled with good "stuff" so those of us who are stay at homes can live vicariously.
All the best..

I just told my wife about the bathroom you had in Venice. The first 8 years of our marriage, we lived in a 2 1/2 room attic apartment in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The bathroom was about half the size of your Venice apartment and had a slanted roof. But then again, we just had a tiny sink and toilet. Your's had a bidet AND shower.

Your narratives are just great. We too have an great affection for an Italian city: Lucca. My father-in-law was born nearby in a little town called Carraia. As was my wife's mother abd many of her relatives. Like Just Plain Ed, I too have some health issues so your blog is a great comfort for me. "Please keep your blog filled with good stuff....." and tell us about more recent trips
All the best....
